Our Sensory Room
A calm, low-demand space where children can explore, regulate and simply be — designed so that every child, however they experience the world, can take part.

Welcome to this room
A calm, low-demand space where children can explore, regulate and simply be — designed so that every child, however they experience the world, can take part.
Children experience and process sensory information differently — and these differences are not always obvious. Sensory experiences also extend beyond the five commonly recognised senses, including vestibular (balance and movement), proprioception (body awareness) and interoception (internal body sensations).
The room is set up with a range of interactive and multi-sensory resources: interactive lighting, fibre optics, sensory floor tiles, tactile resources, a sensory light table, bubble features, an interactive aroma panel and calming spaces.
These resources are used flexibly to support exploration, curiosity, interaction, engagement, communication, calm and regulation — respecting each child's strengths, preferences and needs.
A Typical Day
- Planned small-group sessions and individual time as needed
- Available whenever a child needs a calmer environment
- Used as part of a child's support plan where appropriate
- Always with a familiar adult alongside
Learning & Development
- Sensory exploration and curiosity through interactive, cause-and-effect resources
- Engagement, interaction and shared attention in a low-pressure setting
- Communication through looking, pointing, pressing and exploring together
- Calm, self-regulation and recovery when children need a quieter moment
Slow light, soft sound and gentle movement — a room designed around calm.

Movement, Balance & Body Awareness
Our trampoline and spinning carousel give children opportunities for movement, balance and body awareness, supporting proprioceptive and vestibular sensory experiences in a playful, safe way.
These resources are available as part of the room's flexible, child-led approach, so children can seek the input they need and build confidence at their own pace.

A Place for Every Child
Some children seek out movement, light and touch; others find noise or busyness overwhelming. The room is used flexibly in response to each child's strengths, preferences and needs.
The bubble wall, light table and rocker give safe sensory input, while the egg chair and aroma panel offer calm, focused ways to explore. Children who are still finding words can share attention and communicate through looking, pointing and pressing.
Adults follow the child's lead, and the room stays predictable so children know exactly what to expect.
